As a Democrat, maybe I should rejoice at the disarray of the Republican Party. However, I do not think that on the national and future levels, this will solve anything. I remember Eisenhower, Senator Bob Taft and Even Nixon, who were always open to compromise and nearly never ideological. None of these people wanted to do away with the “New Deal”, nor did they ant to involve themselves in people’s personal sex lives.

Now, unfortunately, the GOP is run by people like reactionary Oklahoma Senators Coburn and Inhofe. Coburn has said that doctors who perform abortions should be put to death, and Inhofe says global warming is a :”hoax”. Also still influential is anti-feminist Phyllis Schlafly and ultra-conservative Christian leader James Dobson. These are part of the so-called “Christian right”. Also, there are secular anti-government reactionary demagogues such as Grover Norquist, who once said that government should be so weakened that it could be drowned in a bathtub. These people have been in the ascendant in the Gop for the last thirty plus years, and they have damn near destroyed their party, as well as greatly damaged our country.

Who says this? Not this Democrat. It comes from people like the following Republicans and former Republicans. I have read many of their books and heard many of their quotes. Former Republican Oklahoma Congressman Mickey Edwards has said that the religious right has been a disaster for the party, Bush has taken power he should not have and our international policy is out of control. He also says that people like Rush Limbaugh and Anne Coulter have no idea of real substantive conservative beliefs. Others who have voiced these beliefs are former EPA chief Christy Todd Whitman, former Senator John Danforth, former GOP strategist Kevin Phillips, and former EPA director for the Nixon Administration Russell Train. Senator Chuck Hegel has also voiced some of these same complaints. Ex Nixon official John Dean has also been very critical.

I remember in college forty plus years ago that I had no problem discussing politics with Republicans and then going out for a beer. I do not want to discuss a damn thing with demagogues like Coburn or Inhofe! Things with that party have got to change if they want to get back my resprct. By God, I hope it happens, not just for the sake of their party, but for the sake of our country.
