Those Pesky Calls
Published by Al Adomite on June 2nd, 2008
Do you ever get those phone calls, you know, the ones that say “press 1 to talk to someone to lower your interest rate…” or “your car’s warranty is almost up…”
Nothing gets me more worked up than those calls.
Tonight I got two of them in a row. The first one from an “Unknown Name” at 506-220-8778 said if I press “2″ I would be removed from their list.
Worked great! Exactly five minutes later I got a phone call from the same “Unknown Name” at 506-223-7670 with the same message. This time I pressed 1 to get a live operator. They said they work for hundreds of lending companies to get lower interest rates on credit card debt.
I told them I was on the no-call list and I wanted to know which of the credit card companies I do business with was contractually working with them and, thus, would allow them to contact me. Then I asked them where they were calling from and they said “Account Services” in Orlando, FL. (Honestly? Then why is 506 is the area code for New Brunswick, Canada)
I asked for the name and phone number of the president of their company, so I could call him/her back if I found that none of my credit card companies were contractually working with them. I was told I could call the number on the back of any of my credit cards. Then I was hung up on.
You would think with all the laws we have in this country, the disclosure, the regulation, and everything else, a consumer would at least not be treated that way without a way to verify or recontact the company that decided to ring my home phone. Twice. In 5 minutes.
Would any sane person actually give their financial information over to someone who called from a non-registered caller-ID that wouldn’t give out their boss’s phone number? How can this be legit, and if not, how can we shut them down?

I’m shocked you got as much information out of the caller as you did.

The last telemarketing call we got was in 2003, right before we turned off our landline home phone.
Why do you need a landline again?
