Prep Athletics & Other Notes

I’ve been meaning to write something about the flood of local student-athlete signings in the newspaper. In Troy, we’ve seen a more diverse group than ever, including a couple years with several girls soccer athletes. Everytime I see the photos in the Times-Tribune of the student, their parents and coach, its a reminder of the investment in time by themselves, their parents and coaches that will equal an opportunity at a four-year degree, sometimes completely paid in full. These signings should really make the community proud.
After my post on Highland’s star pitcher, I thought this tidbit would bring a smile to Triad fans:
Triad High graduate Kevin Hoef, a junior third baseman at the University of Iowa, was selected in the 48th round of the baseball draft Friday by the Boston Red Sox. [...]
A second-team All-Big Ten pick this spring, the Troy native hit .357 with nine doubles, four triples, three home runs and 31 RBIs. He also stole 17 bases and was hit by pitches a school-record 20 times. Hoef also holds the school record for being hit by the most pitches in a career with 49.
That’s the Triad spirit: A school record for taking pitches for the team.
And, I think the villainy I remember of Triad playing Highland has mostly worn off after 15 years, which is why I’m not devastated by this development:
The [Highland] Bulldogs won the state championship with a 6-2 victory over Rock Falls at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, ending the season with a 36-4 record.
In all serious, congrats to the Bulldogs on their state championship.
Finally, for any of you that check in on this blog because we might know each other from high school, I’ve been neglecting to mention that the Triad Class of 1993 will have an informal reunion get together at the Marine Homecoming this year on Saturday night (June 28). Plan is to meet near the beer stand after the parade (which starts at 6pm).
Yeah, it’s been 15 years since graduation.
