Party Dis-Unity

Published by Al Adomite on June 11th, 2008

Plenty of dissension in the Democrat and Republican parties in Illinois. For the GOP, the State Convention last weekend displayed some divisiveness in agreeing upon new RNC members from Illinois. Other issues cropped up, as well, including direct election of State Central Committeemen. IlliniPundit has a running discussion on the issue this afternoon that is worth reading.

Not to be outdone, the Democrats in Illinois are in an all-out war over a leaked memo, thought to be from Madigan’s people on the possible impeachment of Governor Blagojevich. Rich Miller has discussions going on Speaker Madigan’s motives, the impact on the fall elections, and the problems the memo is creating.

ArchPundit, one of the most influential Democrat bloggers in our area, gives his opinion fairly simply:

Blagojevich is Illinois’s Bush. Impeach him, impeach him now.

Hoffman, one of Blagojevich’s closest allies, is attacking Madigan:

Rep. Jay Hoffman, a member of the state Democratic central committee and Gov. Blagojevich’s House floor leader said he’s “offended” that Speaker Madigan would use the Democratic Party’s money to send out the impeachment memo “in order to further a vendetta” against the Democratic governor.

And I thought Republicans liked to fight. Diane at Respublica points out a key phrase in the memo:

One thing we learned from the (imprisoned former Republican Gov.) George Ryan case is that we should excise a tumor when it is first discovered; not leave it in the body to continue to spread and do further harm.

Hoffman challenger Dwight Kay has released this statement:

It’s time for Governor Blagojevich and his floor leader, advisor, and best friend Jay Hoffman to come clean on these issues prior to the November election and an investigation by the Illinois House will uniquely serve that purpose.

Meanwhile, a Democrat House challenger from a “near” Chicago district is blasting a Republican for being too soft on the Governor:

Emily McAsey , the Democratic candidate for 85th District state, last week issued a statement calling for Gov. Rod Blagojevich ’s impeachment in the aftermath of his buddy Tony Rezko ’s conviction. Not only that, McAsey of Lockport accuses her Republican opponent, Rep. Brent Hassert of Romeoville, of not being tough enough on the Democratic governor.

Wanna bet no elected official in Illinois is picking up their cellphone this afternoon?

  1. Ron Says:

One has to wonder whether Jay Hoffman will be carried out to sea with the Governor by this ugly democratic wave of dissent against their own guy. Hoffman, for so long the go to guy in the region, is now forced to attempt to defend a very very unpopular Governor. He looks foolish in doing so.
The Republicans best option should be to sit back, buy some popcorn, a beer and watch the show.
Their only decision is to try and figure out is this show a comedy, a tragedy, or just a plan old horror film?
