Random Thursday Thoughts

I’d write more today, but I’m too enamoured with my new Facebook acount. Gordy had said that I should check Facebook out, and that I’d be surprised how many people we know have accounts, and that it’s a great way to find lost friends and reconnect with old classmates, etc., but I have to admit that more than pleasantly surprised after Day One.
Which leads me to another story and thought. I remember when e-mail and the Internet became dramatically more popular and, at that time, I had a friend tell me what a “waste of time” it was and how it was equivalent to just sitting and playing solitaire on the computer. Literally ten years later, he now connects with hundreds through a weekly e-mail for his job.
The same “revolution” has occurred with social networking sites like Facebook. They might have been fun “diversions” at first, but now they seem to be a great way to stay connected. Now, the Obama and (to a lesser extent) McCain campaigns thrive off social networking opportunities on the web.
I’ve found that, in just one day, I’ve been reconnected with several old college friends for which I had been hunting, as well as some old work friends from Springfield. A couple of us have exchanged e-mails already and it just makes me feel better that several others are now just a click away.
So, what about these social networking sites? Time well spent or time wasted? And, if you’re not on one of them, why not? And it seems that blogging and social networking don’t necessarily work hand-in-hand yet.
