Random Monday Thoughts

Published by Al Adomite on June 30th, 2008

I’ll keep on top of the Chairman’s race petitions this afternoon.  I’m hearing through the grapevine that a challenge is now unlikely, but I’ll check with Mark late this afternoon to double-check at today’s deadline.  That proves what little I know, I guess.

I’ve been light on posting for past week for two reasons.  First, I’ve been completely consumed with my new Facebook account.  Second, I have had some work projects and some home projects to which I’ve needed to devote some attention.

I ran into Marine County Board Member Kelly Tracy on Saturday night at the Marine Homecoming (more on my reunion in just a second).  After looking, I realized that she is probably the only County Board member with a Facebook account (I do think that Republican candidate Jacob Dean has a page, as well).  She said that she keeps in contact with some younger supporters in her district through the site.  Which led me to think about whether social networks like Facebook are being used locally in politics?  Or are they just creatures of big national campaigns?

As for the 15-year High School reunion, I thought it was a success.  I graduated in a class of about 160 and we did have a 5-year reunion but not a 10-year.  I would estimate perhaps 30 people turned out on Saturday night.  Nice to see Kristi Wilson, Bob Warfield and Jimmy Schlecte, among many others.  Kudos to Sara Eberhardt Boyd and Shelley Horstmann Hess (I spelled your name right, Shelley) for putting the event together.

Susan and I spent the weekend marveling at the number of people showing up to lighten the load of bricks from around the demolition of the McCray-Dewey school here in Troy.  It’s the second of two schools that have been demolished not but two properties from my house, which has been keeping the daytime noise level rather high.  Molden Elementary bit the dust (literally) two weeks ago and there’s now barely a sign the school ever sat there.  For all the work put into building projects and bond referendums, it’s incredible to think an old school can disappear in two weeks time.  But the Triad School District is in an enviable position when it comes to the district-wide quality of its facilities.

Today is the fifth Monday of the month, which is an “odd” day when you serve in local government and your meetings are on the first and third Mondays of the month.

Alan, it was great to see you at the homecoming! Be sure and keep in touch. Which should be much easier now that you’re on facebook. Oh, and I hope you are winning your facebook race:)

Keep up the great work on your blog! Partisan Discourse has quickly found it’s way to the top of my political blog list and I am becoming slightly addicted to it. Nice work!

    Kelly:

I’d be happy to have you, or any other local county board members, contribute some material on here. So, if you have an issue that strikes your fancy, please don’t hesitate to solicit some space on here. Mark and I have intended this to be a platform for that type of purpose.

And, for any other of our local official readers, the invitation is extended to one and all.
